    About This Workout

    Why This Workout Works

The deltoid has three functionally separate heads — anterior, lateral, and posterior — and each responds to a different plane of movement. Overhead press hammers the front, lateral raises target the side, and rear delt flyes catch the back head that almost every desk-worker neglects. Pairing shoulders with abs works logistically because neither muscle group is prime-moved by the other, and the plank/leg-raise block gives the shoulders enough recovery between sets to hit them fresh again if you want to loop back for extra volume.

Who It's Best For (and Who Should Modify)

Suits lifters running a 5-day split who want a lighter session between heavier chest and back days. Skip the barbell overhead press if you have current AC-joint pain or have never learned to brace the trunk under overhead load — use seated dumbbell presses instead. Rear delt flyes are one of the few exercises safe to do daily, so they can carry over to warm-up sets on other days if needed.

    Common Form Mistakes to Avoid

    • 1.Turning lateral raises into a shoulder-shrug. If the traps are doing the work, drop the weight by half and lead with the elbow, not the hand.
    • 2.Overarching the lower back on overhead press to force the bar up. Brace the abs, squeeze the glutes, and if the bar path still needs a back-bend, the load is too heavy.
    • 3.Speeding through hanging leg raises. Uncontrolled swing turns the movement into a lat exercise; if you have to kick the legs up, drop back to knee raises.

    How to Progress Over Time

Overhead press progresses slowly for most lifters — expect 5 lb per month, not per week. For lateral raises, use a metronome (2 seconds up, 1 second hold, 2 seconds down) before adding weight; time under tension is the main driver here. On core work, extend the plank hold by 15 seconds every two sessions and add a 5 lb plate on the lower back once you can hold 90 seconds cleanly.
